Guitar on Vengeance Video

Hey Carly,

I'm in my mid twenties, so I'm a generation or two late to be one of your fans that are "in the know" about your career. I do enjoy your music however, and think you have a wonderful singing voice.
I was watching VH1 classics channel recently, and I saw the video for 'Vengeance'. I was wondering if that was really you playing that guitar solo in the video? If it was, then you go girl.. ;)
Thanks, Phil Jordan - Smithfiled, RI

Dear Phil,

I was so NOT playing the guitar that it's embarrassing to say it now. It must have been my dear friend John Hall playing it and I just wanted to look cool and well, there wasn't much for me to do in the solo except pick up the electric guitar and kind of learn the part without really learning it. Yes, I am a fake. A terrible fake. And that is only the beginning. I am also not entirely tidy in my drawers (bureau drawers that is). Sorry to disappoint you. But the real players should be given credit. Thank you John, wherever you are. I was young then, but I should have known better.

Thanks for keeping me straight. Love, Carly - 2/21/04

Daughter Sally's wedding

Hi Carly,
A while ago I read the wonderful news in the Vineyard Gazette about Sally's wedding. Congratulations to all! Would you be willing to share some of the songs that were played at this most special occasion? It sure would be lovely to visualize a late summer evening on the Vineyard on this cold snowy February evening. Thanks, Joan - East Hampton, CT

Dear Joan,
The wedding was on Menemsha Pond and it began at four o'clock. The weather couldn't have been lovelier. Sally and Dean rode in on a boat from the pond and then got dressed up at a house who's owner let them dress in the kitchen. Her father, who's name is just drawing a blank right now, and I walked on either side of her down the isle. Faces were smiling and the ceremony was rather long but compelling.

There was lots of music coming at every point in the ceremony. Ben sang the Cat Steven's song: "How Can I Tell You" and I sang "True love" a song that Cole Porter wrote for "High Society". There was a great horn band from New Orleans and there was more dancing than singing by the ultra expected to sing family. Kind of nice though. I think we were all a little nervous in front of each other. Odd thing to say, but there it is. Love, Carly - 2/14/04
