David Steinberg Show
Here's a flashback for you. Do you remember appearing on "The David Steinberg Show" with James in 1971? You sang "Angel From Montgomery", then "You Can Close Your Eyes" with JT. Was that your first TV appearance? For some reason, I seem to remember this, I wondered if you did. Jon Urban - Columbia, CT
Wasn't David siting in for Johnny Carson? No, that's right, it was the David Steinberg show. Yes, I remember it vaguely. I remember some contre-temps over it, but I can't remember what it was.
I love David, though I haven't seen him in many years. Love, Carly - 4/22/04
Silver Bracelet
Dear Carly.
I have just received and watched my copy of the 'Live From Martha's Vineyard' DVD. It is wonderful! Congratulations!
You look stunning on stage and on your arm there is a lovely silver bracelet. Is it the same one that appears on your arm on the cover of 'Anticipation'? I'm sure I read somewhere that you wore it as a kinda "safety aid" when you felt uncertain and nervous about flying or performing on stage? What happened to it? Do you still wear it?
Thanks for releasing the DVD for us all to enjoy. You're a beautiful soul.
Love, Rosie Ross-Newton - Cambridge, MA
Wow, I like all these questions about my adornment. Yes, it's the bracelet I wore for at least twenty years until I passed it on to Sally. She now wears it as her escutcheon and pretty much never takes it off.
Joey, my older sister gave it to me when we were little girls. She got it from a West Indian friend of my parents. She recognized it as not being 'real silver' and so gave it to me for she feared not the loss of a 'great object of wealth'. It was of course an object of great sentimentality to me and still is. However, it never tarnishes and so it is not silver. What it is, I do not know (as far as the metal). Love, Carly - 4/16/04
The Red Boots
Not going to gush about my dedication since the on air debut of That's the Way I've Always Heard it Should Be [grateful that Stockton CA had a rather pro-active AM back then]. Not going to bore you with the "dream come true" story about third row seats at The Gorge in WA [not just me either]. Not even going to admit how profoundly I was moved by the progressive brilliance that is The Bedroom Tapes [So Many Stars IS me].
I will admit without shame how proud I am to own an autographed copy of Anthology. That I display framed prints of promo posters [My Romance & The Bedroom Tapes] near my computer & stereo. That even though I went to Portland shows by Sally & Ben because of who their mother is, it was more out of curiosity for their own talent [seen/met each 3 times]. It never ceases to amaze me how many of your lyrics are burned into my memory [even Bedroom!]. Okay, so that's gushing. Enough.
On to the question for Carly. I know there are far more important issues to ponder but I am curious: are the boots on the cover of Playing Possum the same as on the cover of Christmas is Almost Here?
Love to you & best to all. Marke Nielsen, Portland OR
Dear Marke,
You have no idea how I've been fearing that question. Here's what I think the answer is. I think I got a pair of black ones after I'd had the red ones (which Jac Holzman gave me for the first birthday I had after I had signed with Elektra) by the same maker (Chelsea Cobbler). I think it was the black ones I was wearing.
Now, the confusing part comes when I tell you truely that I just don't remember the black ones!!!! Maybe even the only reason I think I remember them is that the picture is in black and white and so I have been 'reading' them all these years as black. But I know for a fact that those 'red boots' were my trademark (to myself) and I rarely wore any other boots so verrily verrily I say unto you, they are probably the red ones and therefore the same ones as on Christmas Is Almost Here.
Now you see why I feared having to probe the depths on this one. A detective show could be built around this: "The Red Boots" and the audience could get quite bored after the first show!!!!
Love from Carly (how proud I am that you display me through your house and your life!) - 4/10/04
